Description
"Strange Fruit Lyrical Cloud"
A word cloud in neutral tones comprised of the most pertinent words appearing in the lyrics of Billie holiday's classic blues masterpiece "Strange Fruit." As far as protest songs go, this piece is probably one of the most important ever written. Recorded in 1939 by Lady Day, it was originally a poem written to protest against the racism that permeated the American south. The song, which details the horror of lynchings, has been credited with starting the Civil Rights Movement. Holiday's own label refused to record the song, fearing retaliation. Eventually it was recorded by Columbia and went on to sell over 1 million copies, becoming Holiday's biggest hit. Personally, I would love to see it re-released as a reminder about just how bad things can get, given the current climate in the country.
