"Sumo"
An antique photograph of two Japanese sumo wrestlers, on which I first did some restoration and then painted in warm, earthy colors. Sumo is an ancient martial art and the first record of the sport dates all the way back to 712 CE. It is the national sport of Japan, which is the only country in which it is professionally practiced. The object of the competition is to force your opponent out of the ring or onto the floor, and the only part of a wrestler's body that can touch the floor throughout the match are the soles of their feet. It is a sport full of ritual, tradition and ceremony, and though I'm not a sports fan by any stretch of the imagination, I've loved watching sumo the few chances I've had to see it. Please visit my Asian Art gallery to see more of my artwork of the Far East.
