"The Cliffs at Deauville"
A photograph I took on film in 1992 from the very top of the grass covered clay cliffs in Deauville in the Calvados region of Normandy France, looking out over the sea on a late afternoon in May. Deauville is a luxurious seaside resort and it's easy to see why, it is just phenomenally breathtaking. Known as the "Flowery Coast" (Côte Fleurie), its accessibility from Paris and attraction as 'the' travel destination for the affluent has earned the coastal town the nickname of the "Parisian Riviera." I took this photograph over 30 years ago and I just uncovered it and processed it for the first time, and I do believe I have found the best photograph I have ever taken. I dunno, maybe I should've looked at it a little bit sooner. The only thing I remember about taking it is that my traveling companion was tightly holding onto the waistband on the back of my jeans. I don't think that would've saved us if I had gone over. While I once again ponder my poor life...
About Susan Maxwell Schmidt
My mind lives in a rather strange world of its own, in a state which I tend to refer to as "delightfully twisted." Through my art, which I am vehemently determined to continue to create with as little outside influence as possible, I work tirelessly to interpret the concepts my mind creates in a moment-by-moment barrage of ideas that always seem to come faster than I can realize them in a tangible form. Though my artwork over the past 40 years has evolved from my early days of shooting on film to manifesting itself in many different forms of more contemporary media, from the delicate transparency of digital watercolor, to the no-holds-barred starkness of noir digital photography, to even the fanciful abstract-turned-conceptual properties...
