Indigenous to Africa, zebra are found mostly in grasslands and on savannas. All zebra are threatened as a species to some extent, mostly due to hunting and changing habitat. Zebras have a long history in artwork, they even appear in cave art dating back over 20,000 years, and are considered a totem animal in some cultures. Despite popular opinion being that the zebra's stripes protect them from becoming prey to such predators as lions, the most commonly accepted scientific theory is that they protect them from biting flies.
